As the release of Symbian^3 draws inevitably close, the anticipation for what Nokia has in store is becoming pretty exciting. Today we managed to get our hands on a couple of very cool videos demonstrating some of the features of the upcoming Symbian^4 OS. The first video takes a quick look at the multiple homescreens, implemented with versatile widget support, similar to that of the Nokia N900. The second video showcases the Photo Gallery application, which is pretty cool and has a sort of thumbnail mini map when viewing photos in full screen. All I can say is that the delay in releasing a new device can only mean that there is something big about to hit us soon, and the excitement is definitely building up here. When taking a step back from the fast growing mobile devices industry, we can see that technology has progressed far beyond what we initially expected. Mobile phones as we knew them are now a thing of the past as they now pack more than just telephony features. Most mobile handsets now come with many modern standards in terms of features; high quality photo capture and video recording capabilities, turn-by-turn navigation, connectivity choices from Bluetooth to sharing online, and web browsing technologies emulating the desktop experience.
Google Maps for Mobile has recently been updated to v4.0 and brings along support for Google Buzz, a social networking service launched yesterday by Google. Buzz is Google’s answer to Facebook and Twitter, combined and bundled with you Gmail account, you can pretty much do everything you can on these existing services. Qt is part of Nokia’s future when it comes to user interface. Check out these images giving you a few ideas on how it might look. If you have the ‘Extras Devel’ catalogue on your Nokia N900, you can find HyperUI (shown on the standby screen, the Application Launcher, the dial pad and contacts), Weather (current weather previews), MyBudget (for personal budget in several categories of expenditure) and ShopList (a shopping check list with several categories).
Snap it. Frame it. Share it. Now you can frame the moment with Nokia Bubble Frame, a one-click upload app for Facebook that adds a bubble frame around your mobile photos. Simply take a picture, add a caption, and with just one click you can upload it directly to Facebook. Change the photo-frame colour, send it as an MMS or even set it as wallpaper. Nokia Bubble Frame is available at the Ovi Store for free, so head over and make your Facebook photos stand out from everyone else’s.
The Nokia N900 is the first Linux-based Maemo 5 powered device from Nokia and it not only brings forward new technologies and new features, it also brings a new ‘Maemo’ way of doing things. Most Nokia users have become so accustomed to the Symbian platform, that any other manufacturer’s OS seams clunky or limited in comparison. Maemo 5 has built on that very success with this cracking new OS, and today I want to share a slice of this device with you, taking you through the ins and outs of the Photo Gallery on the Nokia N900. The Nokia Beta Labs have today released an early beta version of the Nokia Image Exchange client for S60 5th Edition, which brings the option of uploading your images directly to Facebook. Although the service has limited functionality, eventually the pre-beta will be updated, making this service a great addition to Nokia’s portfolio. Nokia Beta Labs has just announced Nokia Image Space, a new experimental solution for displaying and sharing your photos. There are now four different ways in which you can enhance your photo viewing and sharing experience courtesy of Nokia; Share on Ovi, Nokia Photo Browser, Nokia Image Exchange and now Nokia Image Space. What strikes me to be a little alarming is that Nokia Image Space does not integrate itself with Ovi Share and instead uses your Flickr account. What this means? Well, I’m not too sure, but I would have imagined that Nokia would’ve kept all new services and solutions under it’s Ovi umbrella.
A couple of weeks ago, I received an email from WOMWorld asking me if I was interested in taking part in an upcoming unboxing challenge. I agreed and on Monday I received a Nokia E72 with a Nokia Bluetooth Headset, locked in a glass encased box that required a four digit code to access it. Along with the box came a poster which had a clue on it reading “I’d fit in perfectly on Wall Street.” There were three other bloggers all with a same box but a different clue, and so we all got together and shared our clues to see if we could crack the code.
